Integrated Weed Management

WEED MANAGEMENT:

It is the suitable combination of preventive measures, mechanical, cultural , biological and chemical method of weed control for minimizing weed growth and population and maintain them below level of economic injury to the crop with minimum damage to the environment.

Methods are adopted for effective weed management:

 1) Preventive Method

 2) Mechanical method

 3) Cropping and competition method 

 4) Biological Method

1) Preventive Method:

1) Use clean seed( i.e. free from weed seeds )

2) Use well decomposed cow dung or compost

3) Cut weeds before seeding.

4) Remove weed growth

5) Farm implements and machinery's should be properly cleaned before using.

6) Do not use soil / sand infested area

7) Nursery stock should be free from weeds.

2) Mechanical Method:

It includes

1) Ploughing

2) Harrowing

3) Hand pulling

4) Hand Weeding

5) Hoeing

6) Burning

7) Flooding

8) Mulching by Non- living materials 

   Hand Weeding by Sickle 

   

.   Weeding by Hand Hoe

3) Cropping and competition method: 

       

1) Proper crop rotation

2) Use of crops which smaller weeds through their growth competition

3) Application of Fertilizers to encourage quick growth of crops as compared to weeds.

4) Biological Weed growth:

In this method, a natural enemy of weed plants is used which attack them and reduce number below an economical level.

Bioagents like insects , pathogen and other animals are used to control weeds.

For examples:

1) Insects :

 1) Lantana camera was controlled by two beetles Octotoma scabripennis and Uroplata giraldi

2) Alligator weed controlled by flea beetle

2) Fish 

Common carp and Chinese carp control aquatic weed .

3) Mannals : Manetee or sea-cow is very effective in controlling water hyacinth

4) Snails : Marisa sp. And other fresh water snails feed on submerged weeds like coontail and algae 

5) Fungi: Water hyacinth can be controlled by Rhizoctinia blight

6) Mites: A spider mite is found effective in controlling prickly pear.

7) plants : Cowpea sown in between sorghum rows effectively reduces the growth of weeds.
